When Covers Don’t Match…

When Covers Don’t Match…

Oh I can just hear you book lovers grind their teeth at the idea!

A few scenarios. You are enthusiastically collecting a series, and you want them all neatly on your shelf…

The latest volume is announced and…
Oh.
They changed the cover design.
This time there’s no mistake. That cover looks the same as what’s on your shelf!
The latest volume arrives, you open the box, and…
Oh.
This wasn’t the cover that was listed online, surely?
Great! You double checked with the seller and he/she confirmed that the cover is the same as the rest of the series. Only one edition, so there’s no mistake.
The book arrives, you open the wrapping, and it’s the same cover!
At last! You put it on your shelf next to its mates.
You stand back and proudly look at your shelf… to discover they changed the spine.

Do you recognise these situations? Does it bother you when covers don’t match?

It sure bothers me *sadface* Let me show you some examples…

LGBT MonthThis month’s discussion topic for the LGBT Challenge is LGBT YA Covers.

I love a pretty cover. If I can pick from several different covers I am likely to buy the edition with the prettier cover even if it’s more expensive. I absolutely love the more ‘modern’ abstract and/or colourful covers that seem to be in fashion right now!
Openly Straight Will Grayson, Will Grayson Boy Meets Boy

And sometimes I don’t understand redesigns… Like Boy Meets Boy. I LOVE the cover above, but the new one (which I had no choice but to buy) is kind of meh:
Boy Meets Boy

Will Grayson, Will Grayson however seems pretty lucky with all its covers, I mean how cool is that cover above? And these are the more popular alternatives, not too shabby either (I love the purple one):
Will Grayson, Will Grayson Will Grayson, Will Grayson

I don’t mind photos on the cover if it’s done nicely. I really like these ones:
Ask the Passengers Stir-Fry
By the way, that redesign of Stir-Fry I like more than the edition I have:
Stir-Fry
Haha XD

Another thing that annoys me about covers is the big logos of all the prizes a book has won. It’s cool if a book has won prizes but… For example, I LOVE the cover of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, but…
This is the cover: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and this is MY cover: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe 🙁

I don’t know why but I’m not a big fan of these covers of Huntress and Ash… but then look at the cover of Malinda Lo’s Adaptation! I love it!
Ash Huntress Adaptation

So do I judge a book by its cover? I try not to, but I do love a good cover 😉
