2014 Reading Stats

2014 Reading Stats

2014 was an amazing reading year. I set out to read 52 books, like last year and the year before, but I passed that number in July. I upped my challenge to 75 and easily crossed that too! Yeah, I have no clue what happened this year…

This is what Goodreads looks like as we speak:

2014

See all the books I read in 2014 here!

And here are my reading stats for 2014:

2014 Reading Stats

Total # of books read: 87

2013: 53
2012: 59
2011: 21
This year, like every other year, I initially set myself a goal of 52 books. However, I finished this challenge in July and I have no idea how that happened. Anyway, then I upped my challenge to 75 and as you see I passed that number too. I have never read so many books in a year! Next year I will aim for 52 again and we’ll see what happens then…

By genre…

I won’t go into each and every genre I read, but as for my go-to genres… (there is some overlap between the genres!)
Classics: 20
Fantasy: 26
Japanese literature: 21
LGBT+: 25
Science fiction (including dystopia): 19
Young adult: 30

By stars…

5 stars: 21
4 stars: 37
3 stars: 20
2 stars: 8
1 stars: 0
No rating: 1
All in all, not a bad reading year! Perhaps because I did a better job at avoiding books I wouldn’t enjoy anyway. Still, I’m impressed how many books I really enjoyed this year!

By gender…

# of women: 33
# of different books by women: 45
# of men: 35
# of different books by men: 42
Interesting! You might remember me saying I was going to read more women. Well, I definitely read more books by women in total. But I also read more different men. In other words, I returned to the same female authors more often.

Most read authors…

First place goes to the queen, J.K. Rowling with 5 books (including Robert Galbraith)!
The second place goes to Laini Taylor, thanks to her wonderful Daughter of Smoke and Bone series!
And a shared third place is for Haruki Murakami and Yoko Ogawa.

Series…

I actually finished a grand total of 3 series!
Hitchhiker’s Guide by Douglas Adams
The Saga of Darren Shan by Darren Shan
Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

And I also started new series…
Divergent by Veronica Roth (definitely not finishing this)
Adaptation by Malinda Lo
Micah Grey by Laura Lam
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling (technically not new, rereading it for the xth time but from start to finish this time)

Challenges

I participated in a lot of challenges this year!
8 challenges for 2014
2 long-term challenges
I wasn’t as successful in all of them though…

  1. Looks like it was a great year! I’m particularly impressed at your high rating. It’s really something I need to learn this year. I had a few one and two stars :S
By the way, what do you do with DNF? Do you rate them 1 or do you avoid rating them? I’m curious!

I also wonder where you find ALL THOSE CHALLENGES!!! :))
