Reading Event: Ominous October

Ominous October Ula over at Blog of Erised is hosting another fun event in October: Ominous October! And as you all know I’m a sucker for theme months like this, so obviously I am participating.

The rules:

  1. Read horror/thriller/supernatural/halloween books (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Graveyard Book etc.)
  2. Post whatever, as long as it’s scary and Halloween-y

Now, I will admit upfront: horror isn’t my thing. As a child I used to devour horror books. There was nothing I enjoyed as much as a good horror novel. My Goosebumps collection is massive, I read plenty of Dutch horror novels for children, and after I read half of my local library’s children’s section I soon moved on to horror for adults. I read authors like Stephen King when I was 10 or 11 years old (yes) but I can’t remember a thing (I remember all of Goosebumps though haha). I was also a huge fan of (especially Asian) horror movies when I was in my teens.

Since then? Haven’t really touched much horror, except classics like Dracula (and are they actually scary? Not really, no…). At some point in time I became super sensitive to horror movies. They rarely scare me but I always end up with nightmares. So there’s that.

But! I’m ready to give the horror genre another go! Here’s what I want to read:

  • Tales of Suspense by Edgar Allan Poe (already started, but have to finish)
  • Coraline by Neil Gaiman
  • The Shining by Stephen King

Hopefully I’ll be able to read more than these three titles 🙂
