Thursday Thoughts: Rereads

Thursday Thoughts: Rereads

Thursday Thoughts This week’s topic is one I have mixed feelings about…

Do you/have you ever reread books/a book? What do you look for when rereading a book? What have you found in the way of changes in your opinions when you reread a book, if any? What books have you reread, if any? Would you ever reread a book that you didn’t like the first time around?

I have a confession to make. I don’t really reread books. Shame on me, I know. But life is short and books are plenty.

It doesn’t mean I don’t reread at all, though. Some books are worth rereading. I’ve reread the whole Harry Potter series at various points in life and get something different out of the books each time. And, for example, I just finished a reread of Alice in Wonderland. When I read Alice the first time, I saw it just as a humorous nonsense fantasy story. This time around, I read it for my MOOC, with annotations, and the experience is completely different.

A while ago I made a list for Top Ten Tuesday of books I want to reread. These are books I definitely want to read at one point or another, some because I loved them, some because I didn’t quite understand them, some because I didn’t like them. But admittedly? Rereading is probably not going to happen any time soon!

  1. I was a huge rereader before I started blogging, but now my TBR list is just too long. I have reread HP more times than I can count, that’s the one series I know I will never stop reading over and over again. I reread TFIOS for a recap before the movie and enjoyed that. The first time I read it I thought it was okay but I didn’t get all the feels that everyone else did, I didn’t even cry. The reread helped because I knew what to expect, I wasn’t getting realistic characters and I had come to accept that, and it helped because I enjoyed it a lot more and sobbed more than once. Here’s my answer.

    1. I’m kiiinda thinking of rereading TFIOS before seeing the movie, but on the other hand.. I have so much to read this summer I’m not sure how I’ll fit it in (even though the first time around it was a quick read)

  2. “Shame on me”. Why?

I don’t reread much either… even though the few times I did it, it was a nice experience. I think I’m just too curious and I feel I don’t have time to read all the things that are interesting before I die so… why would take time to reread something? Also, the suspense and discovery is a huge thing for me. I can’t read a book if someone tells me how it ends. So, having already read a book makes me less excited to read it again.
Of course, there is this huge exception called “Belle du Seigneur” by Albert Cohen. But it’s just that no matter how many times I read this book, I don’t think I’ll ever “get it” all.

    1. I know, it’s not something to be ashamed about 😉 but I’m always a bit envious of people who are able to reread!
I agree with the suspense & discovery part 😀 I feel the same!

  3. I’m definitely a re-reader. Yes, time spent re-reading is time I’m not spending on a new book… but I’m never going to read ALL the books anyway, whether I re-read or not, and I just love spending time with old favorites. I don’t re-read as much as I used to, but it’s something I love making time for.

  4. I don’t reread often because like you said, life’s short and there are SO many books to read. But I do read Potter every year (though in 2013 I only read 1-5). I also don’t rewatch many shows, but I do rewatch Friends and Charmed on yearly basis. 😀 They’re just so awesome.
I plan the ASoIaF reread for this year because the books are vast and I forgot a lot, which is a shame, so I hope I can make it. But generally, I don’t do it often. Maybe if 2 books in the series are so far apart I have to for the sake of remembering…

    1. A little while ago when the final HP movie was on TV for the first time, I was so tempted to start rereading the series right at that moment haha. But it’s high up on my seriously-I-need-to-reread-this list.
